From the moment that life begins, patterns of development emerge. We are born without a language, but soon we learn to speak. We are born without the strength to walk, but soon we learn to run. Life moves forward at a rapid pace as we learn to overcome obstacles. We learn to take baby steps that lead to giant strides. At each juncture we face obstacles that are difficult to cross over without help.
In the physical realm, a bridge is built to extend over natural obstacles such as a valley or a body of water. When one faces a life obstacle, such as emotional pain and loss, or even the unknown span of the future, a “life-bridge” may need to be built so that one is able to cross over to new territory.
When you are facing a life obstacle, here are a few “life-bridges” that can help you move forward with fresh focus and insight.
One: When facing the unknown, follow the footsteps of others who have crossed the bridge before you. If you are a newlywed, press into others who have a strong and vibrant marriage. If you are a new parent, learn from other parents of children you truly enjoy being around. If you are facing a loss, press into others who have experienced your pain and have truly overcome.
Two: When experiencing conflict, learn to be a great listener. Learning to listen to your own heart as well as the heart of the one you are in conflict with will save you from hours of fruitless conversation and days of emotional pain. Become a skilled listener not only to the words that are spoken, but especially to the heart meaning behind the words. After you have truly listened, your positive empathetic words will build a bridge to higher ground.
Three: When you find yourself stuck, look for a new way to cross over. A century ago, building the Golden Gate Bridge seemed impossible to everyone except Joseph Strauss. With bold engineering, and a vision that refused to give up, Strauss and his team built a bridge to withstand harsh winds, tide, and the potential of earthquakes. In other words, don’t give up! You don’t need to stay stuck forever.
Allow hope and faith to point you to a new path and a bridge to a new beginning!
